What Does a Habitat Board Member Do?
As a member of the Board of Directors, you'll help provide strategic leadership and governance for Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay.
You'll have the opportunity to contribute your expertise, participate in important conversations about the organization's future and help Habitat build relationships throughout our community.
Board service is also an opportunity to expand your own leadership experience, meet other community and business leaders and use the skills you've developed professionally in a completely different way.
Most importantly, you'll be helping an organization working right here in Thunder Bay to create safe, stable and affordable places for families to call home.

Behind every Habitat home is a network of volunteers, donors, businesses, community partners, staff and leaders working together to make it possible.
We now have over 30 Habitat homes in inventory, and continue to build, renovate, and partner with families across Thunder Bay and the district. Recent builds include Alexandra Street (2025), Hargrave Street (2024), and McLaughlin Street (2024).

What's the commitment?
Board Members are expected to contribute approximately 10 hours per month to Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay. This includes attending monthly Board meetings, reviewing meeting materials in advance, participating in committee work or special projects when needed, and serving as ambassadors for Habitat within the community. While the exact commitment can vary throughout the year, most Directors find that dedicating about 10 hours per month allows them to make a meaningful impact while balancing professional and personal responsibilities.
How often does the Board meet?
The Board of Directors meets once per month for approximately 90 minutes. To accommodate summer and holiday schedules, the Board typically does not meet in July or December. Additional committee meetings may occasionally be scheduled throughout the year based on organizational needs and strategic priorities.
How long is the term?
Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay is currently updating its Board governance structure to move to three-year Director terms. Directors may be eligible for renewal following the completion of their term, subject to board approval and organizational needs. The three-year term provides Directors with the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution, support long-term strategic initiatives, and develop a strong understanding of the organization's operations and impact.
What are my responsibilities?
As a Director, you are responsible for:
- Providing strategic direction and governance oversight.
- Ensuring financial accountability and sustainability.
- Acting in the best interests of the organization.
- Supporting Habitat's mission, vision, and values.
- Maintaining confidentiality and avoiding conflicts of interest.
- Participating in discussions and decision-making.
- Helping strengthen Habitat's presence and relationships within the community.
- Supporting fundraising, partnership development, and organizational sustainability.

Is there liability insurance?
Yes. Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay maintains Directors and Officers (D&O) Liability Insurance to help protect Board Members acting in good faith while carrying out their duties. All Directors are expected to exercise due diligence and fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities.
