Where: Habitat for Humanity Home Build – 210 Leith Street
When: Tuesday September 15, 2020 at 10:30am

Two families will be in their respective homes before Christmas this year thanks to the generous support of the community of Thunder Bay. Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay has reached their goal to complete the current duplex on Leith Street.

“When we first approached the community in July we didn’t know what to expect” says Lana Vukelic C.E.O of Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay. “This year has been tough on everyone financially and that affects charities that rely on donations to fulfill their mission”

The biggest contribution to the fundraising goal came from two anonymous donors via the Thunder Bay Community Foundation. Alexandra Calderon the Executive Director of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation says “our objective is to help build stronger and more vibrant communities and through the two generous donors the Community Foundation was able to do that. A total $130,000 was donated to this years build via the Community Foundation thanks to it’s donors.

Vukelic says “it is a gift from heaven” when we needed it the most our community stepped forward. Not only did Habitat receive this big donation from the Community Foundation they also received in kind and cash donations totalling $27,500.

Generous community support has allowed Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay reach their goal within 2 months of it’s plea to the community. “The community members have really shown their support for our mission, giving whatever they can to help. It has taken time but I believe that the community of Thunder Bay realizes that donating to Habitat for Humanity is an investment in Thunder Bay, said Vukelic,.

“Every dollar that’s donated to Habitat for Humanity, there’s four dollars that go back into our community,” and in turn boosts the city’s economy.

“From us buying items to be able to build the house, from our family that pays property taxes when they purchase the house, dollars are going to stay in our community and be used over and over again,” she said.

Habitat for Humanity hopes to have the homes completed and families living in them by Christmas of this year.
