Assistant Manager, ReStore


Primary Role of the Assistant Manager is to assist with all aspects of the ReStore operations at Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay.  The purpose of the ReStore is to generate revenue through the sale of donated furniture, building materials and household items to support Habitat’s operations.  Through its efforts, the ReStore facilitates recycling, minimizes landfill waste, provides low-cost home improvement items and increases Habitat’s visibility in our community.

Operations of the Retail store for overall business performance with priority focus on the marketing and sale of donated and purchased inventory to achieve sales targets, the planning and execution of an efficient receiving process.  Establishing a workplace culture that emphasizes customer service and reflects Habitat for Humanity values.


The ReStore Assistant Manager’s responsibility is to provide support to the ReStore Manager, engaging in a wide variety of tasks in the ReStore and act as manager on duty in Manager’s absence.


  • Drive sales and profits from both donated and purchased ReStore inventory to provide sustainable funding to support Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay’s programs
  • Assist with the daily retail operations of the ReStore, including assisting ReStore Customers, donation pick up acquisition, merchandising, scheduling and other functions related to donation centre and customer experience teams
  • Implement sales strategies in collaboration with ReStore Manager and CEO, that capture and retain a diverse customer base
  • Work with colleagues to develop marketing and advertising programs to build the store’s visibility in the community and surrounding region
  • In partnership with the ReStore Manager, build and maintain relationships with potential and existing donors, including contractors, suppliers, individuals, businesses and community
  • Establish, review and implement policies and procedures to ensure a safe and secure working environment
  • Oversea merchandising of the sales floor, maximizing available sales space and using inventory control and pricing to ensure appropriate turnover of merchandise
  • Oversee all scheduling of all store activities including staff schedules,  volunteer schedules and other special events
  • Ensure all areas of the store, restrooms, parking lot, warehouse and yards are clean and safe at all times
  • Ensure all equipment and vehicles are maintained and in safe and good working order pursuant to MTO requirements regulations. Ensure maintenance, and mileage logs are kept up to date by drivers.
  • Hire, train and motivate staff. Establish annual goals and perform annual performance appraisals in addition to performance management and on-going coaching to bring out the best in employees

Volunteer Engagement

  • Assist the ReStore Manager in maintaining and enhancing the volunteer base in the ReStore. Includes volunteer recruitment, hour tracking and assignment of tasks.
  • Train new volunteers and staff to deliver high quality, consistent customer service experiences in the ReStore and ensure issues are resolved and reported in on timely basis
  • Provide direction, supervision and feedback for ReStore Volunteers
  • Conduct regular team huddles and toolbox safety talks with staff and Volunteers and monthly team meetings to ensure staff and volunteers are deeply aligned with direction and goals of the ReStore and Habitat Thunder Bay

Finance & Administration:

  • Ensure compliance with all financial reporting practices: reconciling of daily sales and the daily closing out of all financial transactions and responsible for POS cash floats balancing.
  • Develop and enforce pricing policy and processes for store merchandise. Review and adjust pricing as necessary for changing market conditions
  • Ensure inventory aging program is established and practices are implemented. Regular reviews are required
  • Assist ReStore Manager with budget preparation and capital costs.
  • Track sales data to determine categories with high low volume and adjust strategies to meet consumer demand

Customer Service

  • Provide customer service through customer engagement in the ReStore; answer questions as they relate to Habitat’s mission and help to build donor base through donation acquisition and follow-up.
  • Support in the growth of ReStore donation acquisition through community outreach with local businesses, donors, organizations and other ReStore supporters


  • With direction from the ReStore Manager, help to merchandise the store and prep for incoming donations. Assist with monthly promotions and ReStore Spotlights


  • Assist the ReStore Manager in developing safe work protocols and procedures as they relate to daily ReStore operations, to maintain a safe working environment and customer shopping experience.


  • Liase with the Digital Media Co-ordinator for social media marketing, DIY workshops and other promotions

Reporting and Communication:

  • Provide monthly reports of sales activities, expenses, volunteer hours and outreach efforts of the ReStore, list of all donations and donors and GIK donations for CRA tax receipt preparations
  • Work closely with the Community Engagement Co-ordinator to manage weekly and monthly schedules as well as long term planning with volunteers
  • Meet with CEO on a regular basis to discuss progress and challenges

  • Ability to plan, schedule, prioritize, co-ordinate delegate and manage multiple work tasks and activities
  • Attention to detail and consistent delivery in a fast-paced environment


  • Complete other related tasks and duties as assigned by ReStore Manager and/or CEO


  • Post-secondary education or greater
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Minimum of 2 years of Retail Supervisory or management experience
  • Solution oriented and innovative problem solving ability
  • Must have basic computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook. Lightspeed POS an asset
  • Familiar with social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
  • Knowledge of building materials and/ or handyperson experience is helpful
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • License to operate a front end loader is an asset.
  • Knowledge and Training of Health & Safety Act
  • Health & Safety Certification is an asset
  • First Aid Training
  • Excellent communications skills in English, oral and written
  • Ability to work in a fast- paced team environment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb ladders, considerable standing, bending and reaching in various positions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
